Celebrities and fans alike expressed their disapproval of West interrupting Swift's win for Best Female Music Video to tout his appreciation of nominee Beyonce.

"Taylor, I'm really happy for you," West said after grabbing the microphone from a clearly stunned Swift. "I'll let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!"

Elliott Wilson, founder and chief executive officer of Rap Radar, sat in front of members of West's entourage at the live Sunday night awards show and said the mood quickly turned from one of surprised amusement to anger. Watch West grab the microphone from Swift »

"At first, people weren't sure if it was kind of like a gag," Wilson said. "You could feel everybody being nervous and not knowing if it was a prank or something. Then people started booing him really loud."

Wilson said he believes that West -- who he said bounded on stage from his seat in the front row near Beyonce -- intended to have his say before allowing Swift to continue but said the rapper became angered by the crowd response in a moment that wasn't captured by the MTV cameras.

"The reaction to his tantrum was so strong ... and what happened was, he gave everybody the finger," Wilson said.

Stars taking to Twitter returned the sentiment with some harsh words for the sometimes mercurial rap star.

Singer Pink tweeted, "Kanye West is the biggest piece of [expletive] on earth. Quote me," and Joel Madden of the band Good Charlotte tweeted, "All i'm saying is Taylor Swift is a young chic and you just walk up and grab the mic."

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton said via Twitter that "Taylor Swift deserved that award, damnit. It is what THE PEOPLE voted! My heart broke for her, she looked so sad at the end of that moment."

Singer Katy Perry weighed in with "F--- u Kanye. It's like you stepped on a kitten."

VMA nominee Kelly Clarkson took to her blog to publish an open letter to West. "What happened to you as a child?? Did you not get hugged enough??" she asked.

Wilson, a noted hip-hop journalist, said there was a great deal of tension inside the event Sunday night before West and his girlfriend, model Amber Rose, left the show.

"It was almost like wrestling, when the good guy turns bad and the crowd turns on him," Wilson said. "Every time his name was mentioned, people booed."

Wilson said he believes that alcohol may have played a part in West's actions, given that the rapper appeared both on the red carpet and inside the arena with a bottle of cognac.

Wilson added that West is well known for such behavior. He appeared uninvited onstage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards, walked out of the 2004 American Music Awards after losing in the Best New Artist category and reportedly threw a backstage tantrum at the 2007 VMAs because he did not perform on the main stage.

"I think Kanye came in to be the bad boy, but he obviously had an emotional spaz moment because he is cool" with Beyonce and her husband, Jay-Z, Wilson said. "I think the alcohol blurred his judgment."

Wilson said attendees at the awards show were allowed to have drinks at their seats.

Emil Wilbekin, managing editor of Essence.com, said West may have gone too far with his antics this time.

"I think that it was not Kanye's place to speak for Beyonce or to ruin Taylor Swift's moment," Wilbekin said. "It's OK for Kanye to rattle off about himself, but I think he crossed the line when he decided to speak for other people."

Though West is known for having a healthy ego, Wilbekin said, his actions may be damaging the very legacy the rapper claims to want to leave.

"He's talked about wanting to be Elvis; he's talked about wanting to be the new king of pop," Wilbekin said. "It's almost like he's overshadowing himself by getting in his own way with his mouth."

West reportedly apologized to Swift via his blog.

As for Swift, the young singer gave her acceptance speech after Beyonce graciously invited her onstage during her win for Video of the Year.

West's disruption wasn't the only one the evening offered, Wilson said. During a performance by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, rapper Lil Mama rushed the stage.

Wilson said that from his vantage point in the audience, the female rapper, who also serves as a judge on MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew," was neither expected nor wanted as part of the performance.

The stars' behavior might have long-lasting consequences, Wilson added.

"I wouldn't be surprised if MTV banned alcohol [at the event] next year," he said.

In what is believed to be an audio message from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden released shortly after the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, he says President Obama will not be able to make good on his election promises to pull the U.S. troops out of Iraq.

The tape was released on radical Islamic websites on Sunday claiming is was a message to the American people, reports CNN.

"To the American people, this is my message to you: a reminder of the reasons behind 9/11 and the wars and the repercussions that followed and the way to resolve it," the message said.

"From the beginning, we have stated many times ... that the cause of our disagreement with you is your support of your allies, the Israelis, who are occupying our land in Palestine. Your stance along with some other grievances are what led us to carry out the events of 9/11."

While the voice could not be clearly confirmed as bin Laden's, the audio footage was streamed over an undated photo of the al Qaeda leader. The video also shows a backdrop of the American flag and the image of the New York City skyline in which the Twin Towers still stood said Laura Mansfield, a terrorism analyst.

Obama was "a vulnerable man who will not be able to stop the war, as he promised, but instead he will drag it to the maximum possible extent," the message said.

While many U.S. troops shave been withdrawn from Iraq's major cities, tens of thousand are still in the country and are not expected to officially part ways for many years.

The voice in the message also says the Obama White House remains under Republican control, highlighting the fact that Obama kept Bush's defense attorney Robert Gates.

"Prolong the wars as much as you like. By God, we will never compromise on it (Palestine), ever," the message continued.

Mansfield made a point to acknowledge there have been no confirmed sightings of bin Laden since the sixth anniversary of the terror attacks on U.S. soil.

The tribute concert for Michael Jackson set to take place in Vienna this month has been rescheduled for London's Wembley Arena in June 2010.

Jackson's brother Jermaine said that too many top artists had been unable to perform at the event.

"Numerous stars were just not able to change their schedules to make a live appearance at the Vienna event possible," said Jackson.

The event had been due to take place on 26 September at the Schoenbrunn castle.

Earlier, representatives for Mary J Blige, Chris Brown and Natalie Cole said none of the three would be at the concert, as previously announced.

"Many artists and performers who I have spoken to personally told me that it would be a great honor to be part of this memorial concert for my late brother," Jermaine Jackson said in a letter.

Remembrance services are to be held in the United States to mark the eighth anniversary of the hijacked plane attacks of 11 September 2001.

Nearly 3,000 people died when the four planes crashed in New York, at the Pentagon and in a Pennsylvania field.

President Barack Obama will speak at the Pentagon site and Americans have been encouraged to contribute to a national day of service.

US soldiers in Afghanistan completed a 9.11km (5.5 mile) run to mark the day.

'Sacrifices of thousands'

Traditional ceremonies including moments of silence and the reading of the names of the victims will take place at the sites of the attacks.

President Obama will join defence secretary Robert Gates at the Pentagon, where 184 people died, to meet members of victims' families and lay a wreath.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the president would "speak about what the day means and the sacrifices of thousands, not just at the Pentagon, but in Pennsylvania and certainly and most obviously in New York".

On Thursday, Mr Obama issued a statement urging Americans to take part in community service while also vowing to "apprehend all those who perpetrated these heinous crimes, seek justice for those who were killed, and defend against all threats to our national security".

Vice-President Joe Biden will attend the New York ceremony.

There will be four moments of silence there - one each for the times the two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers and for the collapse of the buildings.

Volunteers who helped in the aftermath of the attacks will join family members in reading the more than 2,700 names of the victims.

The BBC's Matthew Price in New York says the Ground Zero area remains a building site, despite plans for a memorial, a museum and five new skyscrapers.

In a break with tradition, the anniversary has also been designated a national day of service.

Americans have been encouraged to contribute their labour and time in memory of the victims.

However, some commentators and members of victims' families have expressed concern that the remembrance may lose its primary focus.

A formal commemoration service will take place later to coincide with the time of the New York attacks.

Semenya tests as 'inter gender'

Tests on South Africa's 800m world champion Caster Semenya are likely to show that she has an inter-gender condition, BBC Sport understands.

Semenya, 18, was asked to take gender tests following her rapid rise to prominence in 2009 and just hours before she won the title in Berlin.

The IAAF has the results but wants them examined before speaking to Semenya.

BBC Sport's Gordon Farquhar said: "It's likely that she has some hermaphroditic or inter-gender condition."

An Australian newspaper has claimed that Semenya is a hermaphrodite - someone who has some or all of the primary sex characteristics of both men and women.

Sports minister Makhenkesi Stofile insisted on Friday: "Caster is a woman, she remains our heroine. We must protect her."

"So I really do not know where the Australia media got this latest one from."

National Assembly's sports committee chairman Butana Komphela added: "Someone is guilty of leaking her confidential medical information to Australian newspapers."

But the IAAF's Nick Davies said: "The statements should be treated with caution as they are not official statements by the IAAF.

"We have received the results from Germany, but they now need to be examined by a group of experts and we will not be in a position to speak to the athlete about them for at least a few weeks.

"After that, depending on the results, we will meet privately with the athlete to discuss further action."

The IAAF has confirmed it will not comment further on Semenya until after the IAAF council meeting in Monaco on 20-21 November.

Farquhar added: "We already know that she has testosterone levels that are three times higher than those normally expected in a female.

"It's a serious issue and the athlete has to be told the implications.

"There are three possible outcomes from the expert's discussions: that the condition does not give her a competitive advantage; the condition gives her a competitive advantage, which cannot be treated; or most likely, the condition can be treated in some way if she consents to it, and in time she can return to competition."

"The IAAF has to weigh the interest of the athlete, an apparently innocent victim in this, with its responsibility to ensure fair competition."

Semenya won the 800m title in Berlin in August in the fastest time of the year, one minute, 55.45 seconds, 2.5 seconds ahead of Kenya's 2007 champion Janeth Jepkosgei.

The company that owns Neverland Ranch hasn't gotten permission to turn Michael Jackson's old stomping grounds into a tourist attraction -- but they just filed a bunch of trademarks with the U.S. Patent Office just in case they do.

We just got our hands on trademark applications filed by the Sycamore Valley Ranch Company -- a company started by Colony Capital and Michael Jackson -- who is attempting to lock down the following names to use with the property: Neverland Ranch, Neverland Valley, Neverland Valley Ranch, and Neverland.

Sycamore also filed paperwork requesting to use the four Neverland names on several products and services including:

1) "Museum services - namely opening a museum in Michael Jackson's former home and providing tours ... providing theme park services."

2) Printed material (post cards, greeting cards, bags, non-fiction books about Michael Jackson, etc.)

3) Games and playthings (toys, dolls, roller skates, toy rockets, board games, playing cards, etc.)

4) For "providing facilities for business meetings and conferences ... retail and online retail store services ... mail order catalog services in the field of novelty, gift, and souvenir items"

5) Clothing, footwear, headgear

Muslim Khan was articulate and skilled in handling the media

One of the highest ranking Taliban officials in Pakistan has been arrested with four other militants in the country's north-west, officials say.

Muslim Khan was a key spokesman for the Taliban in the Swat valley as well as one of the most senior militant commanders in the region.

The army recently staged an offensive in Swat, which it declared a success.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says this is a milestone for the army's operation there.

One of the chief criticisms of the operation had been that it had failed to net the top Taliban leadership, our correspondent says. These are the first significant arrests.

The whereabouts and fate of the Taliban leader in Swat, Maulana Fazlullah, are unknown.

After reports that Maulana Fazlullah was close to death earlier this year having being seriously wounded, it was Muslim Khan that contacted the BBC to say the Taliban chief was "alive and healthy".

Muslim Khan is one of the most recognised faces of the Taliban in the Swat valley.

He frequently spoke to journalists on behalf of Maulana Fazlullah. He was articulate and skilled in handling the media, our correspondent says.

The widely travelled Muslim Khan speaks English fairly well and also gave interviews in Arabic.

He spent two years as a seaman with a British shipping company in the 1970s and lived in the US in the late 1990s, where he worked as a house painter.

The military said Mr Khan was apprehended after a "successful operation".

He was detained along with fellow militant Mahmood Khan, also reported to be one of the most senior Taliban commanders in Swat.

It is not clear when the operation took place.

The militants had rewards of 10 million rupees ($121,000) on their heads.

Mahmood Khan has been described as the commander of Kuza Banda in northern Swat, the Associated Press news agency reports.

Three other militants were also seized in the operation.

Tribal militias

The latest fighting in the Swat valley began in April when Pakistani Taliban forces expanded their operations into districts only 96km (60 miles) from the capital.

Under the terms of a peace deal, militants were expected to disarm in exchange for the implementation of Sharia law throughout the Malakand division, which includes Swat valley.

There is disquiet in Swat over the corpses of suspected militants

The army accused the Taliban of reneging on the deal. As the fighting intensified some two million people were displaced.

Although many have returned, there is still unrest and bloodshed in the troubled district. Fighting is still reportedly continuing in isolated pockets.

And in recent weeks, more than 200 corpses have been found across the valley.

The killings have been carried out execution-style and the bodies are believed to be of suspected Taliban militants.

Security forces have strenuously denied carrying out extrajudicial killings as part of their anti-Taliban offensive. They claim local residents are behind the attacks.

While this remains unconfirmed, local residents have formed tribal militias to take on militants in what correspondents say is a new development for the region.

In early September, members of a local tribal militia killed three suspected insurgents.

The army has been encouraging the voluntary tribal fighting forces, which exist in other parts of north-west Pakistan.

Uganda: Eight Killed in Kampala Riots

Kampala — At least 8 people have been killed in riots in Kampala's central business district, Uganda, on Thursday, as Buganda monarchists protested what they say is government mistreatment of their King, Ronald Mutebi.
Among the dead is a policeman who, according to reports, was shot near the Total petrol station in the suburb of Nsambya by rioting youth after they disarmed him.
Three civilains were killed by police in the city centre, one in the Bwaise area, and another in Nateete.

Nsambya, where the policeman is killed, is where the main Catholic-run hospital in Kampala and the US embassy are based.
Tension has been mounting in recent weeks between the central government and members of the Buganda kingdom over land rights, and a recent decision by the state to block the King from travelling to a part of his kingdom where local residents resent him.
Military Police took to the streets of Kampala, firing live ammunition to disperse Buganda pro-monarchist protesters.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected to address a press conference on the tensions later Thursday evening.

Speaking to journalists earlier on Thursday, the minister for information Kabakumba Matsiko said the government would have a position before Saturday. She said that consultations where still going on and called for calm.
President Museveni was on Thursday scheduled to meet MPs from the Buganda region to discuss the ongoing tribal tension between the Baganda and the Banyala. The Banyala in Kayunga have violently protested the Kabaka's visit.

La Toya Jackson is days away from losing her Las Vegas home -- unless she comes up with enough cash to pay the mortgage by the end of the month.

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, La Toya owes $745,670.27 on her swanky condo in the Regency Towers of the LV International Country Club.

The docs show the house will go up on the auction block if she doesn't pay up.

The Clark County Recorder's office tells us the auction was originally schedule for August 31 -- but it was postponed. The new auction date is September 30.

La Toya's rep gave us this statement:

"La Toya has an extensive real estate portfolio and her advisors directed her to the business decision to let this particular property to go to short sale where it is now.

The property was also something she got during her divorce from Jack Gordon and she has no attachment to it."

Nigeria: Govt-Israel in U.S.$25 Million Arms Deal

Abuja — A deal worth $25 million has been concluded between Israel Shipyards and the Nigerian defense ministry for the manufacture and delivery of two Shaldag patrol boats, an Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.
One boat has already been delivered and Nigerian crews have been trained in Israel by Israeli instructors who will provide further training in Nigeria

The report is coming just as the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Avigdor Lieberman is in Nigeria as part of his tour of African countries that will also take him to Ethiopia, Angola, Uganda and Kenya. He is reportedly accompanied by dozens of businessmen, most of them arms dealers, as well as security advisers and representatives of the military industries.

Amit Sadeh, the middleman in the $25million deal, was involved in the controversial sale of air and sea drones by the Yavneh-based Aeronautics Ventures to the Nigerian defense ministry, as well as the sale of used planes from Ukraine to Nigeria.
Sadeh also represents Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), whose Ramta subsidiary competed for the same deal. IAI as well as the CEO of Israel Shipyards, Avi Shahaf, declined to comment, while Sadeh was not available.
The deals, according to the Haaretz newspaper, have put Israel in the position of interfering in an internal Nigerian dispute that could lead to civil war. The boats and intelligence equipment are intended for the use of Nigerian forces against rebels in the Niger River Delta region.
In an interview with Haaretz last year, a spokesman for the rebels warned Israel not to go ahead with the sales.

50 Cent Just "Died" ?

As a person shows growth, whether it be in their own personality and character or in their overall outlook on life, there comes a time when he/she must leave parts of their past just there. In the case of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, the rapper has built an image from his moniker that presented a man dealing with violent circumstances and the aggression that came from dealing with them.

Raised during the early 80's, then a drug dealer, Jackson was slanging during the crack epidemic and ran the streets as the life of a hustler. As he tried to leave the negativity and pursue something positive with rap, he was shot in 2000. Clearly before meeting Dr. Dre and Eminem, the rapper was heading in a direction that would have lead to his eventual downfall.

Jackson is no longer in the position that he was when he first hit the streets with his mixtapes and when he made his mainstream debut in 2003 with Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. As a result, the rapper has stated that since he is no longer part of those circumstances, he feels that he no longer feels the need to go by his rap alias and would like to be referred to only as Curtis Jackson. In a recent interview, 50, excuse me, Curtis stated:

"The aggression that translated the strongest in my first album is what Hip-Hop culture looks for. It's a persona. I'm not under the same circumstances I was under when I (first)worked in music, so it feels completely different."

Ever since his debut, fans have gritted their teeth in discontent and have had the feeling that the aggression that helped build the rapper before becoming famous had fizzled and he had become yet another victim of the money and the control it has over an artist with their creativity in music. Making bubble gum songs such as “Candy Shop” has made listeners discredit him and question his credibility as his music wasn't as hard edge as it once was and with a name such as 50 Cent, they expected more.

Adopted as a metaphor for “change,” the alias was derived from Kelvin Martin a.k.a the “Real” 50 Cent, who was a talented robber, as the name stood for everything that he wanted to say as Jackson felt as though he had the same mentality as Martin in which he would provide for himself by an means.

As was the case with Jay-Z when he made the song “There's Been A Murder”, sometimes there comes a point where a person must shed the weight of their past and start off new. Back to Curtis Jackson the hustler, 50 Cent is dead.

T.I. is set to star in the film Takers alongside Matt Dillon, Chris Brown and Idris Elba. The film is a crime thriller about a Los Angles detective that is on the verge of diffusing a plan made by thieves who are trying to carry out a $20 million heist.
Takers is set to theatres on January 8th. Originally titled Bone Deep, T.I. is also serving as one of the executive producers of the film. Here's the poster for the upcoming film.

Jay-Z Concert Ends With Stabbing

As Jay-Z is celebrating the release of The Blueprint III and his upcoming “Answer The Call” Concert on Friday, a one-night only concert featuring the rapper ends with a man being rushed to a hospital. A dispute between two men after the show resulted in one man being stabbed.
The incident took place on Tuesday in Chicago as Jay-Z was holding a performance at the of Blues. At the close of the show, an argument ensued between two women and two men associated with the women were forced to step in according to Police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak. One man was said to be the boyfriend of one woman and the other was the brother of the other woman. Although one might think that the two were stepping in to resolve the situation, they only sparked it more as they became physical with one another by shoving each other.
"The women were exchanging words and it escalated to a small -- shoving match. The men sort of stepped in and it...escalated to where the men got into the confrontation," said Lesinak.
Everything hit the breaking point when a knife was pulled out and used to stab the other. Although no names have been released, the stab victim was 20 and the man responsible for the act was arrested on the scene of the crime and will be charged.
A related incident happened at a Fabolous concert last month in Pennsylvania when a man and woman were shot following the show and had to be rushed to the hospital.
In terms of the music, numbers so far have estimated that the third chapter to The Blueprint series will project 300-350K for its first week. Looks like Jay can open up space on the shelf for yet another number one album.

Obama: Time for 'bickering' is over on health care

WASHINGTON – Shaking off a summer of setbacks, President Barack Obama summoned Congress to enact sweeping health care legislation Wednesday night, declaring the "time for bickering is over" and the moment has arrived to protect millions who have unreliable insurance or no coverage at all.
Obama said the changes he has in mind would cost about $900 billion over decade, "less than we have spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and less than the tax cuts for the wealthiest few Americans" passed during the Bush administration.
In a televised speech to a joint session of Congress, Obama spoke in favor of an option for the federal government to sell insurance in competition with private industry. But he said he was open to alternatives that create choices for consumers — a declaration sure to displease its liberal supporters.
Obama's speech came as the president and his allies in Congress readied an autumn campaign to enact his top domestic priority. While Democrats command strong majorities in both the House and Senate, neither chamber has acted on Obama's top domestic priority, missing numerous deadlines leaders had set for themselves.
In a fresh sign of urgency, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., announced that his Senate Finance Committee would meet in two weeks to begin drafting legislation, whether or not a handful of Democrats and Republicans have come to an agreement. The panel is the last of five to act in Congress, and while the outcome is uncertain, it is the only one where bipartisanship has been given a chance to flourish.
Obama said there is widespread agreement on about 80 percent of what must be included in legislation. Any yet, criticizing Republicans without saying so, he added: "Instead of honest debate, we have seen scare tactics" and ideological warfare that offers no hope for compromise.
"Well, the time for bickering is over," he said. "The time for games has passed. Now is the season for action."
"I am not the first president to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last," he added.
The president was alternately bipartisan and tough on his Republican critics. He singled out Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for praise at one point. Yet, moments later he accused Republicans of spreading the "cynical and irresponsible" charge that the legislation would include "death panels" with the power to hasten the death of senior citizens.
In one gesture to Republicans, Obama said his administration would authorize a series of test programs in some states to check the impact of medical malpractice changes on health insurance costs.
In a reflection of the stakes, White House aides mustered all the traditional pomp they could for a president who took office vowing to change Washington. The setting was a State of the Union-like joint session of Congress, attended by lawmakers, members of the Cabinet and diplomats.
The House was packed, and loud applause greeted the president when he walked down the center aisle of the House chamber.
Additionally, the White House invited as guests men and women who have suffered from high costs and insurance practices, seating them near first lady Michelle Obama. Vicki Kennedy, the widow of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., was also on the guest list. Kennedy, who died last month, had made health care a career-long cause.
Obama intends to follow up the speech with an appearance Saturday in Minneapolis, the White House announced.
Despite deep-seated differences among lawmakers, Obama drew a standing ovation when he recounted stories of Americans whose coverage was denied or delayed by their insurers with catastrophic results.
"That is heartbreaking, it is wrong, and no one should me treated that way in the United States of America."
The president sought to cast his own plan as being in the comfortable political middle, rejecting both the government-run system that some liberals favor and the Republican-backed approach under which all consumers buy health insurance on their own.
Obama said the legislation he seeks would guarantee insurance to consumers, regardless of pre-existing medical conditions, as well as other protections. "As soon as I sign this bill, it will be against the law for insurance companies to drop your coverage when you get sick or water it down when you need it most," he added.
The president assured those with insurance that "nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have."
Obama also said the legislation he seeks would help those who lack insurance to afford it. "These are not primarily people on welfare," he said in a line that appeared aimed at easing concerns among working-class voters. "These are middle-class Americans."
The president also said he wants legislation that "will slow the growth of health care costs for our families."
Obama said a collective failure to meet the challenge of overhauling health care for decades has "led us to a breaking point."
Responding on behalf of Republicans, Rep. Charles Boustany, R-La., said in excerpts released in advance that the country wants Obama to instruct Democratic congressional leaders that "it's time to start over on a common-sense, bipartisan plan focused on lowering the cost of health care while improving quality."
"Replacing your family's current health care with government-run health care is not the answer," said Boustany, a former cardiac surgeon.
The so-called government option that Obama mentioned has emerged as one of the most contentious issues in the monthslong debate over health care, with liberal Democrats supporting it and many moderates inside the party opposed. An early draft of Baucus' plan calls for an alternative consisting of nonprofit co-ops. Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, the Republican who seems most inclined to cross party lines on the issue, favors a different approach, consisting of a standby in which the government could sell insurance if competition fails to emerge in individual states.
The speech took place after weeks of halting progress and highly publicized setbacks for Obama and his allies on the issue of health care. After internal divisions prevented House Democrats from passing legislation in July, numerous members of the rank and file were confronted in town-hall style meetings with highly vocal critics.
There were charges — launched by former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and debunked by nonpartisan organizations — that the legislation included "death panels" whose purpose was to facilitate the end of life for the elderly under Medicare.
At the same time, polling has shown a deterioration in support for the president, and an AP-GfK poll hours before the speech showed public disapproval of Obama's handling of health care has jumped to 52 percent, an increase of 9 percentage points since July.
Democrats had yet another change to factor into their plans. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's death this summer robbed them not only of the experience of one of the Senate's most accomplished legislators, but also of their 60th vote in the Senate. That meant they needed at least one Republican vote to choke off any filibuster. Alternatively, they could try a more partisan approach, drafting a bill that could not be filibustered, but also shorn of some of the provisions they want.
Republicans greeted Obama's appearance politely but coolly.
"When it comes to health care, Americans don't want government to tear down the house we have," said Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
"They want it to repair the one we've got. That means sensible, step-by-step reforms, not more trillion-dollar grand schemes."
Obama has said repeatedly that agreement exists on about 80 percent of the issues involved in drafting legislation, and the White House and Baucus have lined up numerous outside interests to help shepherd a bill to passage.
The nation's drugmakers and hospitals have already made deals to help pay a cost of the legislation. The American Medical Association also is in support, in large measure because the bills would avert planned reductions of 20 percent in their Medicare fees.
AARP, which advocates for those aged 50 and over, supports the approach Obama and his congressional allies have taken.
On the other hand, the nation's health insurance providers have yet to come to terms with the White House. In recent weeks, Obama has used them as a target, accusing them of putting profits over patient coverage by denying coverage and other steps.

Lil Wayne Tops Concert Grossing List, Grosses $40 million

Weezy F. Baby has topped the charts again. This time it's for having the highest grossing Hip-Hop tour of the year. According to Billboard, seventy-eight Lil Wayne headlining arena and amphitheater concerts in North America from Dec. 14, 2008, through Sept. 6, 2009, grossed approximately $42 million and drew nearly 804,000 fans.
"It's definitely one of the biggest in the last couple of years,” stated Lil Wayne tour producer and tour business manager Shawn Gee. Noting that Haymon Events/Live Nation was the exclusive tour promoter for all of the shows, he added, “Our plan was to prove that Wayne was a viable headlining arena artist."
Also according to Billboard, Wayne's tour is the most lucrative they've ever tracked. Number 2 was Hova and Mary J. Blige's tour, which grossed $34.6 million and drew 310,694 fans in 28 shows. Kanye West's 2008 “Glow In the Dark” tour comes in third, having pulled in $30.8 million from 49 concerts that attracted 507,853 fans.
The tours were in support of Lil Wanye's 2008 album, Tha Carter III, which has sold 3.2 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The rapper's oft-delayed next album, Rebirth, is due Nov. 24.

Caster Semenya Gender Test Results Expected In Weeks, Gets Makeover

The embattled South African sprinter caught in a firestorm about whether she is a man or woman will soon learn her fate. Gender tests are expected to show the true biological sex of 18-year old Caster Semenya in about two weeks. The Associated Press reports that IAAF spokesman Nick Davies told them on Tuesday that it would take about two weeks for a group of medics and anti-doping experts at track and field's international governing body to analyze the results but it is unlikely that she will be stripped of her medal.
Davies says, "Only then with conclusive evidence would we be in a position to make an educated decision."
Semenya left spectators in an uproar after suddenly breaking her own personal record in July and becoming the new African junior champion. Speculation was capped off when she dusted her competition in Berlin's IAAF World Champions by a startling 2.45 seconds to win the women's 800 meter finals.
Despite the ongoing tests, Caster remains positive. She recently told South Africa's You magazine that she thinks the test are silly and a joke.
“I see it all as a joke, it doesn't upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself. I am who I am and I'm proud of myself.”
She appears on the cover of the magazine and in a four page feature. The runner looks drastically different wearing a dress and makeup. In one picture she has on liquid leggings and stilettos. Caster made sure to add that the makeover is not to prove a point saying, “I didn't do this to prove a point but rather to have fun. I don't give a damn what people say about me …”
Good for her. She looks much better.

Jay-Z Responds To T-Pain Diss, Announces Tour Dates

Jay-Z released his highly anticipated Blueprint III album today, three days earlier than expected. Fueled by the singles “D.O.A. (Death Of Auto-Tune)” and “Run This Town,” Jay-Z revealed,
“We were supposed to come out on September 11th but due to the “demand” (leak) of it, we had to push it up which is great. You can expect the level of musicality that I thought had started becoming missing in Hip-Hop. It's an approach to lyrics again and just an overall maturity and growth in music.”
Jigga also spoke on his “D.O.A.” record and gave little more detail on the message he was trying to get across. Jigga stated,
“I think it's cool for a couple of people but I don't want to hear 10 songs in a row with Auto-Tune . As a fan of the music, all I was saying is let's just keep it diverse. I used to have Q-Tip's album and Ice Cube's album. Public Enemy and N.W.A. It was just so much diversity in music and now everything is starting to sound like the same thing. And I understand it because of the pressure to sell records right now is higher than ever with the Internet and sales being down 20% every year. But still, there has to be some type of integrity in the music that we make. It can't all be for money. We have to make a living of course but it can't only be driven by that because then the music is gonna suffer.”
T-Pain, Hip-Hop's King of Auto-Tune, recently had some choice words for Jay and his opinion on “D.O.A.” During a performance, the Tallahassee Nappy Boy said,
“Jay-Z is 59 years-old so I don't think he has the right to say what's good and what's not. I mean if anybody's dead, it should be him. That's just me. Now I just want to clarify, if there are any Jay-Z fans in the house, excuse the fuck out of me. But you don't hear me saying that rap is dead. Even though it is because apparently all the rappers are trying to do T-Pain.”
Jigga also fielded questions from Cipha Sounds and Paul Rosenberg on New York's Hot 97 radio station on the recent tirades, stating,
“I hope he had fun saying it.”
In related news, Jay-Z has announced his fall tour.
“We gone go out on tour in the fall around October and do something again before the end of the year and then in the spring head overseas.”

Akon Sued, Set To Perform MJ Tribute

Akon is the latest entertainer to be hit with a lawsuit from an “injured fan.” A New Brunswick University student claims that she was severely injured at one of Akon's concerts in 2007. Katherine Teresa Hooper filed the suit saying that Akon left the stage during a concert in St. John, Canada and forced his way through the audience. The claim states:
“During the concert Akon, without notice or warning, left the stage and appeared at the back of the crowd and with the assistance of his entourage of personal security personnel, forced his way in and through the crowd while continuing to perform. The plaintiff says that as Akon and his entourage approached her through the crowd she was unable to get out of his way due to the congestion of the crowd and lack of any control thereof. Akon and his entourage pushed and shoved the plaintiff, causing her to fall which resulted in serious personal injury.”
She is also suing the concert promoters, Gillet Entertainment and the Harbour Station Concert Hall where the incident took place.
In light of his upcoming lawsuit, Akon can look forward to paying homage to his late friend and legend, Michael Jackson. He is the latest act added to a line-up of performers for a tribute concert in Vienna, Austria. Also confirmed to perform are Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown, Natalie Cole and “We are Family” singers, Sister Sledge. The performers will work alongside the band and dancers that were set to embark on the “This Is It” concert tour with Michael.
The “King Of Pop” will also be honored by a reenactment of a scene from the TV-movie “Jacksons: An American Dream.” Angela Bassett will perform a scene from the film as MJ's mother, Katherine Jackson in tribute to him. The concert organizer, Michael's brother Jermaine Jackson will perform a “virtual duet” with the late singer. 20 to 25 more acts are scheduled to confirm their participation. The concert will be televised worldwide.

P-Square Receive Record N50 Million Deal for Upcoming Album “Danger”

Word on the street is Nigeria’s mega pop twins, P-Square, have concluded plans for the marketing, duplication and distribution of their new album "Danger" by a Nigerian marketer in exchange of a sum of N50m. This supposedly is the highest ever for any Nigerian artist.

According to our sources, the twins are alleged to have received a check for the sum of N40m already out of the entire N50m sum agreed. In an effort to battle piracy, Nigerian artists sign marketing deals and relinquish distribution and duplication rights to marketers, especially Alaba based ones.

Their last album, “Game Over”, was sold to Tjoe Enterprise, a major Alaba marketer, for nationwide distribution for an alleged sum of N10m. It is of no surprise that the value of the twins has since appreciated between late 2007 when they released "Game Over."

P-square over the years have become arguably Africa's biggest artists, selling out concerts all over Africa. They have slowly become Africa's Michael Jackson causing mass excitement at their shows and concerts.

Their latest single featured on their upcoming album, Danger, is already gaining a lot of buzz on radio stations, TV, and blogs all over the continent.

From attending a small Catholic school, St. Murumba College, in Jos, where they performed at social nights and school shows as students, the twins have really come a long way.

NORCROSS, Georgia (CNN) -- Beneath seven flat-screen TVs and one large pulldown screen, members of the Racquet Club of the South gathered Monday to watch and celebrate one of their own.
Melanie Oudin, 17, of Marietta, Georgia, has been taking the tennis world by storm at the U.S. Open.

The 70th-ranked female has been handing out upsets to some of the sport's biggest female stars, including Russian aces Elena Dementieva (No. 4 seed) and Maria Sharapova (No. 29 seed, who has been ranked No. 1 worldwide in the past). And on Monday, she beat 13th seed Nadia Petrova in three sets.

Her latest win has made her the youngest American to move into the quarterfinals since Serena Williams in 1999.

"It's still so surreal," said Anne Keeton, player liaison at the club, before the match started. "She sort of wins no matter what happens. She's there going for it and not giving up."

At this suburban club, co-owned and co-directed by Oudin's longtime coach, Brian de Villiers, articles about the local tennis phenom dot the walls. In the Grill, on a Bud Light message board above drink specials, are the words "Congratulations Melanie!" And a photo of her mixed in with other young players is posted near a downstairs fitness room.

Blending in with others and not retreating to "a Melanie court" is part of what makes her special, Keeton said. When there was a flood on some indoor courts this year, she was down there squeegeeing with everyone else.

"She so lovely and so accessible," Keeton said. "It couldn't happen to a nicer kid."

The restaurant buzzed as tables filled with more than 80 onlookers who were courtside in spirit. They feasted on a spread laid out to mark the special occasion as the match started.
When Petrova took the upper hand, and the first set, fans erupted into applause with each of Oudin's hard-earned points and offered encouragement like "There we go!" When she pumped her fist in celebration, they did the same. And when a play didn't go her way, they groaned in unison.

Her skills were apparent from an early age, said Turhan Berne of Norcross, a coach and tournament director who's known Oudin since she was 9. He watched her rake in wins, beating older kids and snagging No. 1 junior rankings in the country and world.

"But you know when I knew she was going to be something?" he said. "She would play with anybody her coach had her hit with. ... She always gave back. She's very grounded. Her parents and coach did a great job not letting her fame and success change her into a different person."

As Oudin came back for the second set, the crowd held its collective breath. With every point she earned, they hooted, hollered and exchanged high-fives. They booed when they saw Petrova losing her cool, banging her racquet against the net after losing a big point.

"C'mon, Melanie!" people screamed as the tiebreaker began in the second set. When Oudin took that set, they rose to their feet, screamed, did happy dances and shared hugs.

"It's awesome," said Kathleen Brady of Norcross. "We are so glad her opponent double-faults."

"Bless her heart," Lisa Wells chimed in with a laugh, offering the Southern tagline to downplay any insult.

Earlier in the day, John Sklare joked that the young pro learned something from him. Over the winter, the Alpharetta psychologist often played on the indoor court beside her.

"I knew she was good, but I didn't know she was that good -- and that's what we're all finding out now," he said.

He spoke about what a "great kid" Oudin is but then added that what he likes best about her is how quiet she is on the court.

Sklare, a former writer for Atlanta Tennis magazine, said he called Sharapova "Screamapova."

Oudin, on the other hand, is "like a stealth fighter," he said. "She's quiet, but you know she's there."

Her overall attitude is as inspiring as her play, said Jeannette Latimer of Decatur, Georgia, whose 11-year-old daughter, Kelsey, has been playing for five years.

"She shows the kids not to get upset on the court," Latimer said. "She's always so positive. If the kids learn nothing else from her, it's her mental toughness."

But Kelsey has been more intent on studying Oudin's moves on the court. "I think she has a nice top-spin forehand," Kelsey said. "I think it's better than mine."

With Oudin up 5-2 in the third set, anticipation hung in the air.

"Both of them are pressing each other, but to see the 70 [ranked player] outplaying 13, that takes heart," Ernie Jensen of Woodstock said.

Going into the match point, some rose to their feet. Together, the hordes clapped, carrying Oudin to the win. When she took the match, earning her first quarterfinal seat in a Grand Slam, the room exploded.
They stood by and watched, smiling widely and some wiping away tears as Oudin gave her victory speech.

"It's like something so big happening to all of us all at once," said Jennifer Silverberg of Alpharetta. "Watching her, it's like watching your own little girl. ... My heart's still going crazy."

The death on Tuesday of popular comedian and actress, Mrs. Monsurat Omidina (popularly known in Nollywood circle as Omoladun Kenkelewu) is generating ripples and has left many questions unanswered. What could have made the woman foam in the mouth, bleed through the nose, causing her to die suddenly? A writer even claimed to have seen bruises on her neck. If this is so, what could have caused it?
These are questions Woman Arise, an NGO fighting for the rights of women and some doctors we spoke with are trying to unravel.

Women Arise, led by Joe Odumakin, has written to the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Supo Sasore (SAN), requesting that the corpse of the deceased, which was interred on Tuesday be exhumed to undergo a coroner’s inquest to determine the cause of her death.

This is coming on the heels of an online report that alleged that her husband, Babatunde Omidina a.k.a. Baba Suwe might have aggravated her hypertensive condition by assaulting her, thereby causing her death.

In a letter signed by Mrs. Odumakin, the organization quoted the online report conspicuously to back up it request.

The organization maintained that the coroners’ request would either acquit Baba Suwe of any guilt or convict him if it is true he committed the crime.

Dr. Namso Okon of Golden Care Hospital, meanwhile, has said that if there was blood in her nose when she was found dead, then it might be as a result of high blood pressure. But with the foaming in her mouth, he said there is need to ask questions if she had convulsion before she was found dead. If not, he said it meant that she must have gone through emotional trauma or hypertension.

Weeping profusely at the burial, Omoladun’s husband and popular Yoruba comedian, Babatunde Omidina (Baba Suwe) lamented: “My wife! Oh, she loved me! She never disrespected or troubled me. Oh! My wife.”

It wasn’t funny watching the hilarious comedian weeping. Baba Suwe was almost inconsolable and he almost jumped inside the grave when the remains of his late wife were about to be lowered. It took the quick intervention of Jide Kosoko and Yinka Quadri to prevent him from jumping into the grave.

One of the late actress’ children, Junior, was said to have discovered her lifeless body and raised an alarm when he went inside her room to wake her on Tuesday morning as she did not participate in the early morning saari break for the ongoing fasting. People rushed in, including her 28-year-old first daughter who saw that she was foaming in the mouth and had blood coming out of her nose. She was rushed to the Ajayi Hospital around Elepe where she was confirmed dead. The doctor’s report was said to have indicated that she died of high blood pressure, an illness she was said to have been battling with for some time but have succeeded in keeping under wraps with medication. Her corpse was brought home and she was buried in the compound later in the day.
News of her death was greeted with shock and disbelief because she was believed to be healthy. The late actress was said to have been planning to visit the British Embassy that Tuesday morning. The Islamic cleric that conducted the burial rites said he saw her three days earlier when she and her husband played host to a group of clerics.

Narrating her experience, the deceased first daughter, Lara said her mother’s death was least expected.

“I met her preparing dinner when I came back. I wanted to take over from her, but she refused saying I should see off my fiancée who came by. I was surprised that she did not come down to wake us for ‘saari’ (the Islamic mid night rising to eat during fasting). I thought she was tired. In the morning, I was there in the compound cleaning the compound when I heard noise from her room. When I got there, she was foaming in her mouth and blood was coming out from her nose. We rushed her to the Ajayi Hospital and I left to call my elder brother who had gone to work. He called me back to inform me that she had died. And we were just planning my introduction. She is somebody I cannot forget’, she said.

Explaining what could be the cause of her death, Dr Dele Adeosun of Ayodele Medical Centre in Oko Oba said the fact that she was bleeding from the nose meant two things; it was either she had high blood pressure or that she was traumatized. Adeosun said the blood veins must have burst in her brain and that could have been responsible for the bleeding through the nostrils. He also said it could also mean she was traumatized.

But when told that the woman had history of high blood pressure, the doctor said it could be high blood pressure and that it would be due to Cerabro Vascular Accident (CVA). CVA is a process where a blood vessel burst in the brain. That was perhaps what was responsible for her sudden death. According to him, the deceased may have been ignoring some symptoms, which were tell-tail signs of her ill health.

Omoladun, who died as one of the foremost female comedians in the Yoruba genre of Nollywood actually did not start out as comedian. She started by acting serious roles. One of the roles that brought her to limelight was Ita Okanlawon in the popular soap opera. She had two children before she married Baba Suwe and had other two children for him before she died.

Moladun started her acting career in Ibadan with a Yoruba Sunday television sitcom titled Okanlawon. The television drama was aired on BCOS and OGTV (now Gateway Television). It was about how a widow suffered so much to raise her only son through the odds. Moladun showed her acting prowess in that tragic comedy television. She was a poor widow who weathered the storm with her only son, Okanlawon.

The television drama was an instant hit in the southwest in the early 90’s back then and everyone rushed home after church to watch ‘Okanlawon.’ This is contrary to the belief that she started off acting as a comedian in Baba Suwe’s comedy drama entitled ‘Erin ke ke’.

The questions begging for answer are: Did the late Monsurat die a natural death or her husband of over a decade has a hand in her death? Time will surely tell.

Nairobi — Countries from the Great Lakes region and Horn of Africa are to harmonise their laws to fight the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

"In order to address the problem effectively, we have resolved to harmonise our laws so that we can rein in the culprits. Our state arms are being marked to help in tracing them if they fall into the wrong hands," Tanzania Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Dominic Hayuma said.
The harmonisation programme comes amid prolonged internal wars in Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and several other countries that have flooded the region with illegal weapons.

In order to address the scourge, the states -- Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia -- signed a declaration in Nairobi in 2000 to step up a fight against illicit arms.

From this declaration arose the Regional Centre on Small Arms (Recsa) that is responsible for co-ordinating joint efforts by National Focal Points in member states to prevent, combat and eradicate stockpiling and illicit trafficking of arms.

Representatives from the states have agreed to harmonise crime laws to effectively combat cross border movement of illicit arms as well as preventing arms from landing in the wrong hands.

The countries are also exploring identical penalties for culprits as a deterrent measure.
The resolutions were made during the conclusion of a recent two-day regional harmonisation legislation meeting in Mombasa.

Mr Hayuma said there was a need for the states to carry out joint disarmament of small arms and light weapons to curb the movement of illicit arms.Tanzania police official said more than 10,000 small arms were recovered and destroyed in the country.

Uganda Commissioner of Police Ahmed Wafuba said the states should have identical penalties to deter illegal possession of arms.

"We want a situation whereby an offender in Kenya gets the same punishment as in Uganda rather than for one country to administer harsher sentences than the other," Mr Wafuba added.

A Burundian police official Ndabaneze Zenon said his government has so far recovered 49,000 illicit arms with 3,000 of them having been recovered last month.
Col Zenon attributed this to forcible disarmament as well as the government incentives such as giving bicycles to those who volunteered to surrender guns.

He added that the proposed small arms policy was passed by parliament some months ago and is expected to become law this month.

Kenya's Solicitor-General Wanjuki Muchemi, who officially opened the meeting said the government was harmonising the Organised Crime Bill, Terrorism Bill and International Crime Bill to boost the war on illicit arms.

Mr Muchemi noted that the changes include prescribing harsher penalties for people who possess guns illegally and addressing the misuse of firearms by police officers to avoid human rights violations.

Last year, Recsa kicked off the exercise of marking state owned firearms at the South Coast.
The markings, which include a country code, is to be added to all weapons in state stockpiles as well as at the point of manufacture, import or transfer.

The information will then be entered into national databases in which states will be able to trace any illicit weapon that might have been possessed by a state in the region through making a tracing request to Interpol.

States will have automatic access to the database as police and military stockpiles are considered to be a matter of state security.

The marking of state owned guns is a fulfilment of the requirements of both the Nairobi Protocol and the International Tracing Instrument.

Talk about a one-man stimulus package: Grammy-winning rapper Ludacris has given away 20 cars to people who wrote about their struggles to keep their jobs for a lack of wheels of their own.
Ludacris said he was taken aback after reading thousands of essays by people struggling or unable to buy cars needed to get to and from work or find jobs. The 31-year-old rapper felt he could step in and move them ahead, partnering with a suburban Atlanta dealership for Sunday's giveaway.

"People are getting laid off, and now are looking for jobs," Ludacris said. "To be efficient, you need some transportation of your own to get there. That's why I wanted to give back to those who need it."

Each of the used vehicles included free gas for 30 days. Winning contestants were responsible for tags, registration, tax and insurance. About 4,000 contestants submitted a 300-word essay to the rapper's foundation, explaining why they deserved a car.

One of the most touching stories Ludacris read was by Mading Duor.

Duor described how he moved to the United States six years ago after his mother, father, and five brothers and sisters were killed in Sudan. The man also wrote that a son was killed by a drunken driver in Atlanta a few years back.

"His story touched my heart," Ludacris said. "He's endured so much in his life and he's still here standing. I'm very proud to have helped him."

Duor, 33, has been able to keep a steady job at a school, but each day he felt stressed about how he was going to get to work. No longer.

"I'm so happy, that I'm nervous," said Duor, who won a Nissan Maxima. "When I look at my new car, I say to myself, 'Is this really happening?'"

Crystal Beauford, a single mother who used to ride the bus to two jobs and school, now has a Saturn Ion. The 26-year-old college student doesn't know how to drive the stick-shift vehicle, but said she'll learn.

"This is going to help me out so much," Beauford said. "It's a blessing."

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – A Sudanese woman was found guilty of indecency and fined on Monday for wearing trousers in a case that has attracted worldwide attention, but she will be spared lashes, an official who attended the trial said.
The woman, Lubna Hussein, was arrested at a party in July with 12 other women and had faced the possibility of 40 lashes for wearing trousers deemed indecent. The court ordered her to pay a fine of 500 pounds ($209) or face a month in jail.
Hussein's case was seen as a test of Sudan's Islamic decency regulations, which many women activists say are vague and give individual police officers undue latitude to determine what is acceptable clothing for women.
A former reporter who was working for the United Nations at the time of her arrest, Hussein has publicized her case, posing in loose trousers for photos and calling for media support.
Reached by telephone after the verdict, Hussein said she would refuse to pay the fine: "I will not pay the money, and I will go to prison."
Defense lawyer Nabil Adib Abdalla has previously said the law on indecent dress was so wide it contravened Hussein's right to a fair trial.
"She was found guilty, but we know she is not guilty ... This is a clear violation of the constitution, of women's rights, and the peace agreement," said Yasser Arman, a government official who attended the trial and is also a senior member of the former rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement.
Ten of the other women arrested with Hussein have pleaded guilty and have been whipped, Hussein previously said.
PROTESTS AT COURT
Indecency cases are not uncommon in Sudan, where there is a large cultural gap between the mostly Muslim and Arab-oriented north and the mainly Christian south. The cases prompted scores of women to gather near the court ahead of the verdict to lend support to Hussein.
Hussein argued her clothes, a pair of green slacks that she also wore to her first court appearance, were respectable and that she did not break the law.
"Lubna has given us a chance. She is very brave. Thousands of girls have been beaten since the 1990s, but Lubna is the first one not to keep silent," protester Sawsan Hassan el-Showaya told Reuters before the verdict.
But scuffles erupted at the protest before the court session even began between the women and Islamists, who shouted religious slogans and denounced Hussein and her supporters as prostitutes and demanded a harsh punishment for Hussein.
Riot police quickly cleared the scene, beating some protesters with batons. Around 40 women protesters were detained.
Hussein has said she resigned from her U.N. job to give up any legal immunity so she could continue with the case, prove her innocence and challenge the decency law.
U.N. officials have said the United Nations told Sudan that Hussein was immune from legal proceedings as she was a U.N. employee at the time of her arrest. But the case was allowed to proceed after Sudan's foreign ministry advised the court that Hussein was not immune.

Nigeria's World Cup quest suffered a setback on Sunday when Tunisia grabbed a last-minute 2-2 draw at the Abuja National Stadium.
The Super Eagles were on course for a much-needed victory in the 80th minute when Esperance striker Michael Eneramo scored Nigeria's second goal only for his Tunisian club mate, Oussama Darragi, to snatch a last-minute equaliser for the north Africans.

Tunisia remain top of Group Two with eight points from four matches, two points clear of second-placed Nigeria with two rounds of matches to be played. Mozambique climbed to third place after they pipped Kenya 1-0 in Maputo.

Only the group winners will qualify for the World Cup finals.

Russia-based Osaze Odemwingie opened the scoring after 23 minutes when he collected a pass from the lively Ikechukwu Uche before darting past two Tunisian defenders and thundering home from inside the box into the roof of the net.

Tunisia drew level two minutes later when Sliti Nabil also produced a rocket of a shot from outside the box to beat diving goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

From the kick-off, the home team took the attacking initiative with Uche and Odemwingie threatening the Tunisian goal.

A combination between both strikers allowed Odemwingie to take a crack at goal, which missed the target.

Tunisia were closest to going ahead in the 20th minute when Lens striker Issam Jemaa rounded Enyeama, but his final effort hit the side netting, much to the relief of the 60,000 fans.

Murray, who now plays 16th seed Marin Cilic in the fourth round tomorrow, was in complete control to silence the home-crowd who were hoping to watch the first major shock of the men's tournament.

Ranked 195 in the world, Dent is still on his way back in the game after missing two years with a back injury yet was not in Murray's class.

Last year's finalist threatened to run riot when he won the first nine points of the match to take an early 2-0 lead but after instantly losing his serve, Murray still displayed why he is the best returner in the game.

Dent served a 145mph thunderbolt at one stage but Murray comfortably coped with his opponent's aggressive style and will be pleased to have wrapped up the match so quickly even though he still did not leave the court until 11.43pm local time — 4.43am BST.

The singing sensation's relative Adrian Henry, 27, stormed a home and robbed a family of three.

The family were attacked when Henry burst in with two other men.

The X Factor winner's relative was arrested when police raced to the flat near Arsenal's Emirates stadium in North London following a series of 999 calls.

Troubled

Henry was found hiding in a bush outside the flat after the assaults over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in April this year.

No weapons were used in the attack.

Henry, of Islington, North London, pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery when he appeared before Blackfriars Crown Court last week and was jailed for six years.

The news came as a shattering blow to 24-year-old Bleeding Love singer Leona, from Hackney, East London, who is said to be close to Henry.

In the past she has spoken openly about his troubled life.

His mum Gem Louise was just 38 when she lost her battle with multiple sclerosis. A year earlier cancer claimed the life of his sister Niasha, 17.

Leona, who is preparing to release a new single and album, said: "Being in such a close family has given me strength in many ways in times of difficulty."

DAVID BECKHAM has hailed Fabio Capello for turning England into a nation of believers.
The Three Lions are on the verge of reaching next summer's World Cup after winning EVERY qualifying match so far.

With a perfect record of seven out of seven, Capello's men are expected to seal their spot in South Africa against Croatia on Wednesday.

That is in stark contrast to the last time England played Croatia at Wembley, when they missed out on Euro 2008.

For most of us, Labor Day means backyard barbecues, weekend sales, and a last carefree day before school starts. But the laid-back holiday has some seriously sad history, including chaos, riots, and even death. Let us explain.

A tragic tale
Back in the days of the Industrial Revolution, workers were expected to put in 12-hour days, seven days a week (yes, including kids). Already sounds awful, right? It gets worse. In Pullman, Illinois, a company town that employed and housed workers to build posh railway cars, times had gotten tough. In response, George Pullman cut jobs and wages. It was 1893. Thousands of workers walked off their jobs in protest, demanding higher salaries and lower rents. Other unions joined, refusing to work the Pullman cars, turning the small-town fracas into a national fury.

With mail cars backing up, and riots worrying train execs, President Grover Cleveland stepped in. He declared the strike illegal and sent 12,000 troops to break the strike. Cue brutal protests and bloodshed. The strike was broken, but so was the spirit of the workers. To reach out to the labor movement, Congress rushed the national holiday into law. The bad will resulted in Cleveland losing re-election. But the day off for hot dogs endures.

When is it?
Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September. This year, that would be Monday, September 7. According to the Department of Labor, Congress passed an act in 1894 making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

So, working stiffs everywhere, say it now, with feeling: Happy Labor Day.

NFL's Merriman arrested, accused of choking Tila Tequila

San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of choking and restraining MTV reality show star Tila Tequila, police said.
However, Merriman's attorney denied the allegations, saying more than a dozen other people were at Merriman's house in suburban San Diego, California, at the time of the incident and "witness after witness after witness will back up his story 100 percent."

Authorities responded to a disturbance call about 3:45 a.m. Sunday from a woman who said she had been choked and restrained by a male, the sheriff's department of San Diego County, California, said in a statement.

When police arrived, "the reporting party identified herself as Tila Nguyen, aka Tila Tequila, and her alleged assailant as Shawne Merriman," the statement said.

"Nguyen told deputies she had been choked and physically restrained by Merriman when she attempted to leave his residence," the statement said.

Nguyen signed a citizen's arrest at the scene, and Merriman was taken into custody on suspicion of battery and false imprisonment, according to the statement.

Deputies didn't see any physical injuries on Nguyen, but she asked to be transported to a local hospital, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said. Nguyen's condition was not immediately known.

Merriman's attorney, Todd Macaluso, told reporters that Nguyen was "extremely intoxicated and inebriated" and that the player tried to make arrangements for her to leave the house.

"At no time did Mr. Merriman assault her. At no time did Mr. Merriman keep her against her will," Macaluso said. "His intentions were nothing but good. ... We're very confident that this matter will be resolved without any charges being filed whatsoever."

Caldwell said alcohol "was involved" on Nguyen's part. Caldwell didn't elaborate.

Merriman was released from jail late Sunday morning. Caldwell said she didn't know whether Merriman was released on bail or on his own recognizance.

The district attorney's office will determine whether criminal charges will be pursued, Caldwell said.

As Tila Tequila, Nguyen starred on the MTV reality shows "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila" in 2007 and "A Shot at Love 2 With Tila Tequila" in 2008.

On her Twitter account, Nguyen did not mention the incident but tweeted about going to meet Merriman on Saturday.

In a statement posted on the Chargers' Web site Sunday, team General Manager A.J. Smith said it is "disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shawne Merriman."

"We'll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course," Smith said.

Merriman, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, is entering his fifth year with the Chargers and the NFL. He recorded at least 10 sacks in each of his first three seasons, but he was limited to one game last season because of a knee injury that required surgery.

The Chargers begin their 2009 NFL regular-season campaign on September 14 in Oakland, California, for a game against the Raiders.

BAYELSA State- born militant singer, Timaya, had a rough taste of love turned sour portion when he was manhandled, handcuffed and subsequently detained by the Festac police for conducting himself in a manner likely to breach public peace.

The show of shame ,which happened last Sunday at an Alakija Lagos-based church, Praise Resurrection Ministries aka Jehovah Sharp Sharp church, disrupted the service, leaving several members of the house of God bruised.

In what an eye witness account described as a reflection of the lyrics of one of his hit songs, Timaya in company of some of his goons, arrived the Church without notice and sauntered into the Thanksgiving service being held in honour of a newly wedded couple named Bridget and Nerho

On arrival, he was allegedly given a seat by one of the church ushers. But he insisted he wanted a place in the front row where (according to our source) he would be positioned to listen to the Pastor and his sermon.

But when the usher stood his ground, he calmly sat without betraying any emotion of what he planned to do.
On his entry, his ex lover, Empress Njamah who was said to have become alarmed quickly stood up from where she sat and made her way to the front row area where some elders of the Church sat.

According to our source, she had expressed her fear to one of the ushers about the danger of Timaya coming to Church saying she was certain he was there to make trouble.

And true to her prediction, Timaya who had seen her move decided it was time to make his own move. It was at this point that he drew the attention of one the ushers insisting he also wanted a place at the front area. But his move was thwarted by the usher who at this point sensed there was something wrong.

As the usher stood his ground, Timaya lost control and began to shout at the top of his voice and to the chagrin of the worshippers, “I want to retrieve the key of my car which Empress took away from my house.”

When the usher insisted he waited until Church service was over, he became unruly and uncontrollable. At a point he was said to have lifted one of the plastic chairs in the Church and tried to attack Empress. This move was however contained by some of the male church worshipers.

“As the struggle and show of shame continued, Timaya, who at this point was shouting at the top of his voice, was rough handled and bundled out of the Church arena.

As the burly musician resisted every attempt to reason with the Church officials, a concerned naval top brass who also worships at the Church, invited his men from the nearby naval barracks and Timaya was subsequently handcuffed and handed over to men of the Festac Police formation. He was detained briefly and later released after pledging to be of good behaviour and on self recognition.

But in a new twist to the church fracas, some explained to this writer that there is more to the story than what the couple exhibited in church.

“The true story, according to our source is that Empress had drawn the anger of the musician on the ground of unfaithfulness.

“Timaya heard Empress was getting married to another man in the said Church and that’s why he stormed the church to disrupt the phantom wedding. Unknown to Timaya, the much talked about wedding took place on Saturday and it was between one of Empress best friends and her long-standing boyfriend.

“What you saw happen in church was a clear exhibition of a man in love and jealous of losing his loved one. I think what both lovers should do is to involve family members who would help them thrash all their differences, ”our source opined.

Empress, who confirmed the story to one of our reporters, however maintained a sealed lip.
The police, she told us, had advised that she says nothing to the press. We could not however reach Timaya as his phone was switched off.

Police spokes man, Mr. Frank Mba, a Police Superintendent who confirmed our story said, “Following the incidence, Timaya has written a petition to us, saying that Empress amongst other allegations, had not only squandered an undisclosed sum of his money given to her to hold in trust, she had also gone beyond his back to remove the said vehicle from his house and without his permission.

Eight OxyContin pills were found in Adam’s stomach and a ninth in his mouth. A source says Adam must have wanted to die as the prescribed painkillers were taken quickly and without thought:
“He wanted to die,” says the source, who says the suicide theory is supported by the pills and other evidence. “He was going unconscious when he took the last one. He didn’t even swallow it.”
